About Aikido Aikido can be translated as the way of peace and harmony and is a powerful system of self-defense that has roots in traditional Japanese martial arts. Founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the mid-twentieth century, Aikido teaches defense without aggression and control without humiliation through blending circular motions designed to neutralize rather than destroy, making Aikido an art popular with police departments across the nation. The study of Aikido is a cooperative rather than a competitive process and |

provides the opportunity to participate in an active contact activity in a nonviolent manner. Developed in response to the aftermath of World War II, Aikido is more than a fighting art—Aikido is also a living art. Master Ueshiba, also called O Sensei or Great Teacher, said, “Aikido is not a technique to fight with or to defeat the enemy. It is a way to reconcile the world and make human beings one family." About Aikido at the Center Aikido at the Center is affiliated with Utah Aikikai, the California Aikido Association, and the Aikikai Foundation. Chief Instructor Stephan McLaughlin has spent more than 15 years studying the art of Aikido. He began his pursuit of TakeMusu Aiki at Steven Seagal's Tenshin Dojo under Matsuoka Sensei. Stephan later continued his practice under the direction of Hugh Young Sensei, the founder of Utah Aikikai, and has maintained close ties with him and the Aikido community.
